Less is more and more is less

"Less is more" is a phrase from the 1885 poem by Robert Browning called (the faultless painter). It was adopted by the architect Ludwig Miles Van der asa a precept for minimalist design. Ludwig was a german scientist and together with the likes of Walter Gropus and Le Corbusier are widely regarded as the pioneers of modern architecture.
Minimalism is used to describe a trend in design and architecture where the subject is reduced to its necessary elements but while using other factors such as lighting to maintain its aesthetic values.
Ludwig adopted the motto "less is more' to describe his aesthetic tactic of arranging the numerous necessary components/elements of a building to create an impression of extreme simplicity by enlisting every element and detail to serve multiple visual and functional purposes for example, using the floor also as a radiator ensures the concept of doing more with less. This concept of Ludwig's seeks to use elements such as lighting, distribution of space etc to complement the buildings simplicity thus achieving " less with more".
On the other hand, "more is less" also stems from minimalism, it follows the  "less is more" philosophy in a supporting role emphasizing the importance of simplicity in any design. It also borrows from japanese tradition like zen concepts of simplicity that transmits the ideas of freedom and essence of living.

le modulor

"le modulor" is a kind of anthropometric scale of proportions devised by a swiss born french architect, "Le Corbusier" (1887-1965). It was born out of an attempt to discover mathematical proportions in the human body. Others who have also done similar include Leonardo Da Vinci etc.
The system is based upon a man with his arm raised to 2.20m in height. It is a stylised human figure with one arm raised, stands next to two vertical measurements, a red series based on the figures navel height.
It was later codified into two books. It main application is in architecture and was used to design a lot of buildings.

Function follows form

"function follows form" is like the reverse of "form follows function". In this , the concept is to determine the shape and size of the building for example based on its primary function, its like building
from the inside out in a way. It is a process that is designed to encourage creativity, it aims as stimulating the designers mind to build around a function.

Form follows function

"form follows function" is a phrase associated with modern architecture. The phrase was coined by American architect LOUIS SULLIVAN. The original phrase is: form "ever" follows function.
The principle behind this is that, the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon it's intended function or use. For example, a building that is ment to be an office should have a formal look to it where as a recreational building should have a design that allows for the maximum achievement of its purpose.
Modernism in architecture began as a disciplined effort to allow the shape and organisation of a building to be determined only by it's functional requirements instead of the traditional aesthetic concepts. It's applications range from architecture, to business models to automobile design and so on.

Environmental design

In this first assignment, we were asked to visit a mall and take pictures of their customer care stand or information kiosk. Here are some of the pictures taken.
These are self explanatory information centres. I think it is very useful and the design is very user friendly.

Assignment 2

For the assignment 2, we were asked to use the images from assignment 1 and animate them using adobe flash cs4.
The first step was to set up a new document, then i imported my images to the stage. Then i put them in different layers so i could animate them separately without accidentally using the other.
The next step was to create a motion tween, i chose one from the various presets available and proceeded to adjust it like i wanted.
I also added some typography to it, I wrote 'global unity'.

Assignment 1

For my assignment 1, the first thing I did was to browse the internet for suitable reference materials that i could use. I then downloaded a couple of images I wanted to use in my assignment for world peace. I used photoshop to edit the images and then compiled it into the final idea I wanted to make it into.
